Buying the Perfect Engagement Ring - A Step by Step Guide

Three steps to buying the perfect engagement ring

Buying and choosing an engagement ring for the love of your life is one of the most memorable and important purchases you will make. You’ll already be nervous about the proposal itself, so it’s important to get the perfect ring to help put you at ease. Here are a few top tips when buying an engagement ring.

Decide on your budget

There’s lots of contradictory advice about how much you should spend when buying your loved one an engagement ring. Just remember that you shouldn’t have to spend an amount you feel is unaffordable - your other half will be over the moon with whatever ring you have got them. The best thing to do when deciding on a budget is to just spend what you can afford and what you feel comfortable with. There’s no point starting married life in debt because you’ve spent beyond your means on the ring.

Guessing their size

There are a few ways that you can figure out your loved one’s size when buying an engagement ring in secret. The most obvious is taking a ring they already own. If you know they don’t wear it regularly and won’t notice it missing, then simply take it to your jewellers to be sized.

Or if you’re worried about them noticing one of their rings has gone, then simply slide it onto your own ring finger and make a pen mark where the ring stops. If you show this to your jeweller, they will be able to help with sizing.

Another trick is waiting until your other half has fallen asleep and tying a piece of string around their finger. Again take this to your jewellers and they will be able to tell you the perfect size.

Think about their style

It can be daunting choosing a ring for your loved one as they’ll be wearing it every day for the rest of their life and so you’ll want them to love it.

To try and work out what kind of ring they might like, take notice of their current jewellery and what kind of style it is. Do they wear classic pieces of jewellery or something more out there, like emerald diamond rings? If you’re still unsure, ask their friends what they think your other half will like - however, make sure they keep your plans top secret!

Finally, it’s likely if you’re in a long-term relationship, your other half may already be hinting about wanting a proposal. Take notice of their hints about any ring styles and metal types they might like.
