How to Care for Your Diamond Ring

Rings are more susceptible to dirt than any other jewellery. In our day to day activities, our hands come in contact with a lot of items, and rings pick up residue from food, cosmetics, pollution, etc. If you want to maintain the sparkle and shine of your engagement ring, you have to take care of it. Here are some tips and tricks on how to do that.

Clean it regularly

When cleaning it at home, use warm water and mild dish soap. Soak it for about twenty minutes, and then gently scrub with a soft-bristled toothbrush. Pay more attention to the areas between stone and setting because they have more dirt build-up. Do not use abrasive products like toothpaste, bleach or sonic devices as they can cause irreversible damage. Once you’re done, rinse and air dry or use a soft cloth, cotton or linen. Avoid using paper towels to dry your ring because they can scratch the metal. Every few months, take it for professional cleaning and polishing.

Separate it from other jewellery

It is not advisable to put your diamond ring together with other jewellery as this can damage the ring as well as your other pieces. The original box your ring came in is the perfect place to store it because it is customised to your ring’s shape and size. If you don’t have it, get a fabric-lined jewellery box.

Know when to keep it on and when to take it off

Take off your ring when doing house chores to avoid damage by harsh cleaning products. You should also avoid going swimming with it. Your finger can shrink when in water due to the temperature change, making it easier for the ring slip out and get lost. When washing your hands in a public washroom, please do not take it off. You can easily forget to pick it up once you are done, or it could slide down the drain.

Although diamonds are the toughest stones in the world, they are not invincible. Your valued 2 carat diamond rings will bruise and chip if you do not take proper care of them.
